All About Layering 4: Lesson 8

Hi.  Thank you for checking out my blog.  I am crafting my way through the Altenew Academy.  I have created lots of cards that I'd be happy to find in my mail box.  Here's my latest creation and how I made it.

Love this layering stamp set.  At first glance it looks challenging to align all the stamps but that part turned out to be pretty simple.  Love the sentiment style.  In this lesson, I learned how to cut that tag so that the angles line up with precision.  Let's get started!

Supplies:
  • Altenew layering die set:  Birds of the Season
  • Ink:  Jet Black, Bamboo, Parrot, Grass Field, Blush, Limestone, Paper Bag, Burnt Red
  • A2 Card Base
  • Black Cardstock cut to 4.25 x 5.5
  • White Cardstock cut to 4 z 5.25
  • Decorative Cardstock cut to 4 z 1.5
  • Decorative Cardstock cut to 4 x .25

Start  by stamping the open wreath in jet black.  You're going to want to stamp it on the white layer near the top of the paper.  The illustration above shows the stamping progression from right to left.  The next leaf stamp gets bamboo ink and the final stamp colors half the leaves in Parrot.

Next you add the pear.  I stamped the pear with Grass field and used blush on the stamp that looks like half a pear.

The Birds of the Seasons stamp set comes with three different bird choices.  I stamped this one left to right to illustrate how you get eventually get something that looks like a bird.  The first stamp uses the color Limestone.  Next comes the cheek stamp that adds Burnt Red.  The body stamp is Paper Bag and when you stamp the last image in black you get a bird with an eyeball, a beak and tail feathers.  Nice.

This set comes with a die to cut out the birds.  I also cut two extra blank birds that I glued together so that it gives a popped up look.

Check out the Sentiment.  I found the "Have A Nice Day" stamp in my stash.  Look at how the Layers are all Cut at the same angle. I learned the easiest way to do that is to line all the layers up together.  Make the cut and then shift each to the left to expose the one underneath, the angles are precise.  Love it!

Glue the strip of decorative paper across the bottom.  The tiny strip is glued across the top.  Add the sentiment.  This panel is centered on the black layer which has been glued to the card base and that's the card!  thanks for stopping by.  Now... go make something pretty.

All About Layering 4: Lesson 7

In this lesson I learned how using mirror images can create balance in your design.  Here's what I came up with...

Supplies:
  • Build a Flower:  Hawaiian Coral Layering Stamp and Die Set
  • Altenew Inks:  Pure Graphic, Arctic, Caribbean Sky, Persian Blue. Sapphire, Fresh Lemon,
    Grass Field, Shadow Creek.
  • Versafine embossing ink
  • Nuvo fime detail embossing powder
  • 3D tape or pop dots
  • Cutting die that creates a doily
  • Sentiment from your stash
  • A2 White Card Base
This card was pretty easy to make... you just need two of everything.  I started with the background.  I used a tonic die that looked like half a doily.  The other option is to use an actual doily die and cut it in half.

Because of the size I placed the two dies on my card base so the straight edges created a space for my sentiment to go.  I'm using one from my stash that says "Have s beautiful day"

I used removable tape to hold the die cuts in place so I could get correct placement for my sentiment.  Next, I powdered the area and stamped the sentiment.  Then I removed the taped die cuts, added embossing powder and used my heat gun to melt it.

Now I was ready to glue the doilies into place.  So far, so good.

Now I was ready to tackle the flowers.  There are six stamps that layer up to create this beauty.  I stamped the detail in Pure Graphite and then starting with the lightest color, I followed the instructions that come with the set to align and stamp the layers.  I added each successive color layer ending with the center of the bloom stamped in Fresh Lemon.

The Leaves for this flower have four stamps, but I opted to only use three.  I started with the detail stamp in Pure Graphite and then stamped the fill color with Grass field.  I skipped the next stamp and used the last detail stamp in Shadow Creek.

Almost there... I added 3D tape to the back of the blooms so they would stand out against the White on White background. I glued them into place, along with the leaves and got a card I was quite happy with!

Thanks for looking!  Now... go make something pretty!

All About Laying 4: Card 6

Hi.  I loved making this card. I  hope you like it too.  This is lesson six in the all about layering 4 class.  I learned a new technique for backgrounds using a decorative stencil, paste and embossing powder.

Supply List:

  • Delightful Day Carnation Layering Stamp set by Altenew
  • A2 Card Base
  • Dimensional Tape
  • Altenew Inks:  Jet Black, Bamboo, Parrot, Citrus Burst, Fresh Lemon, Maple Yellow, Honey Drizzle, Soft Lilac, Lavender Fields, Deep Iris
  • Altenew Alcohol Markers:  C001, Y205 and R702
  • A Sentiment stamp from your stash
  • Ornate Stencil of your choice
  • Stencil Paste
  • White Pearl Embossing Powder

I started by creating the background.  I taped the Memory Box "Ornate" stencil on an A2 size piece of white cardstock.  Then I covered the stencil with the Bo Bunny Stencil paste called Whisper.  I removed the stencil and add White Pearl Embossing Powder.  Shake off the excess and set it aside to let dry.

Once dry, I heat set the panel and watched the shine come to life.

Next I colored the blooms and the leaves.  I did one in Purple following the guide included in the layering stamp set... adding each color from light to dark as the directions indicated.  I did one bloom in the yellow hue, the other in the purple hue and the leaves in green.

Next I die cut the shapes with my little blossom machine.

I arranged the flowers on the card base and used removable tape to hold them in place.

Next I flipped them over and added dimensional tape to the back.

I didn't like the white edge on the back panel left by the stencil, so I decided to add a little color.  I went with the yellows because I thought the purple would stand out too much.

For my sentiment, I chose a funny one from Tim Holtz's "Snarky Small Talk" pre-printed sentiments and added it to a pearlized cardstock background.   Glue the background panel to the card base.  Peel the backing off the florals and stick them down.  I added a strip of dimensional tape to the sentiment... stuck it down... and just like that... beautiful card.

All About Layering 4: Lesson 5

Hello and thanks for stopping by.

Here's today's card... but to be honest, it's not my favorite.  Although, I did learn a few tips that will come in handy in future cards.

For this technique, the BIG sentiment takes center stage. The Black background makes everything stand out.

SUPPLY LIST:
  • Bellaroma Hybrid Tea Rose Layering Stamp and Die Set
  • Inks:  Jet Black, Rouge, Crimson and Velvet from the "Red Sunset" Fresh Dye Ink Set; also Bamboo and Parrot
  • A Large Sentiment:  I used Hello by Picket Fence Stamps
  • A2 Card Base, Red A2 Layer Panel and a Black cardstock panel cut to 4" x 5.25"

Stamp the outline of the Rose and the Leaves with Jet Black ink.  Color the First layer of the Rose in Rouge.  The second layer gets Crimson and finally, Velvet.  The leaves are colored with bamboo and the detail stamp gets Parrot.  Because the die cut leaves a white  border, I colored the outer edge with a black pen to help it blend into the black background.

I die cut the BIG word out of the same red as the matte layer.  I cut two more copies, stacked and glued them together.  I also cut out a Black version of the word and glued it to the back slightly askew to create a shadow.  The multiple layers allow for a no fuss pop up. Glue the red layer to the card base.  Next center and glue the black layer.  Arrange the flowers and leaves and finally that perfectly popped up sentiment.

I think I may try this with a different flower.  Thanks again for visiting Ink Spot Blog.  See you next time

All About Layering 4: Lesson 4

Hi there!  It's me again...  with more fun with the Altenew Academy Layering classes!  In lesson four we learn another great tip to make sentiments more scintillating.

This was an idea I'd never tried.  I love how that leaf at the top appears to be waving... like it fell off a tree and is blowing in the wind.  And that birthday greeting is a real stand out!

Supply List:
  • Crown Bloom Layering stamp set by Altenew
  • Altenew Inks:  Citrus Burst, Fresh Lemon, Maple Yellow from the Pocketful of Sunshine set, Firefly and Green Field
  • A2 Card Base, A2 Silver Glitter Cardstock layer and Black cardstock layer cut to 4" x 5.25"
  • Silver Glitter Washi Tape
  • Sentiment Die.  I used "Happy Birthday" from my stash

Stamp the outline with Jet Black Ink.  Then do the first layer stamp with Citrus Burst.  The detail layer is applied with Fresh Lemon and the final layer is stamped with Maple Yellow.

The outline of the leaf gets stamped in Jet Black.  The fill in layer gets stamped with Firefly.  Stamp the detail layer with Green Field.

I didn't have a die so I fussy cut the flower and three leaves out.  It was pretty easy to fussy cut and although some people hate to do it... I actually find fussy cutting therapeutic.

Now comes the fun part.   I grabbed a piece of yellow cardstock and and applied a line of the glitter washi tape across it.  I then laid my "Happy Birthday" die so that most of the happy landed on the yellow and most of Birthday ended up on the washi tape.  I ran it through the die cut machine and assembled the card.

As you can see, I layered the base card with silver glitter cardstock and black cardstock and added my flower, leaves and the fancy Happy Birthday.  What a difference that Washi tape makes on the sentiment.
Until next time....

ALL ABOUT LAYERING 4: Lesson 3

Hello and welcome to my blog.  I am slowly working my way through the Altenew Academy classes.  Working with Layering stamps takes practice.  For this lesson I used the Painted Poppy layering stamp and die set  and learned a new way to use sentiments.  Take a look.

Notice how the same sentiment is repeatedly stamped on the card front.  The final stamping is on the lower right so that it can be clearly read.  Lets start with a supply list to make this card:
  • Painted Poppy Layering Stamp and Die Set by Altenew
  • A2 card base, a black A2 layer and white watercolor paper cut to 4" x 5.25"
  • A sentiment stamp from your stash
  • Blue water color ink.  (I used Butterfly. by Jane Davenport)
  • Altenew Crisp Dye Ink in Burnt Red, Mahogany Bark, Shadow Creek and Grass Field

I started with the background watercolor paper.  I gave the paper a little spritz of water to make it take the color smoothly.  I loaded up my brush and make strokes back and forth across the paper allowing it to get lighter and lighter as I reached the bottom of the paper.

I Stamped the Poppy Twice in Jet Black and then stamped the first layer with Burnt Red and then the detail layer in Mahogany Bark.  Below you see where I stamped leaves and the bud with stems in Jet Black and then did the fill in stamp with Shadow Creek.  The detail stamp went on next in grass field.

When you add the Burnt Red to the center of the bud... it springs to life.

I glued my watercolor layer to the front of the card, arranged the flowers and secured them together with removable tape.

This allows you to pick up the flowers to see where to stamp.  I made sure to leave room for the full sentiment at the bottom.

Once all the stamping was done, I glued the flowers in place.  I liked how this card came out.  I hope you like it too.  I think this technique adds drama to the finished card.  Thanks for checking in.
